My First Forays into Home Coffee Roasting!

There’s something incredibly satisfying about brewing a cup of coffee with beans you’ve roasted yourself. I recently embarked on my home roasting journey with a “Poppo” roaster from Sweet Maria’s, and it’s been an adventure!

The Poppo is a great starter, but its simple on/off switch makes precise control a challenge. My first batch was a lighter roast, and after some feedback, I learned to give the beans more development time, leading to a darker roast.

A small mishap: I melted the plastic cap during one roast!Huge shout-out to Sweet Maria’s for their amazing customer service and quick replacement. To gain more control, I took a suggestion from online forums and picked up a voltage regulator on Amazon for about $25. This has given me a bit more finesse with the roast profile.

While these initial roasts might not be perfect, the joy of drinking coffee made from beans I’ve roasted myself is truly indescribable. I’ve already done about three batches, and I’m hooked! I’m excited to share that I’ve ordered an SR800, which should arrive this week. I’m looking forward to diving deeper into serious home roasting and will be sure to share my learnings and experiences with the Fresh Roast SR800 soon!
